Installments are cumulative: each percentage is the total that should be paid by that date. Liability uses the AY 2026-27 slabs, 87A rebate, surcharge and 4% cess. One thing this calculator leaves out: resident senior citizens (60 or older) with no business or professional income are fully exempt from advance tax under Section 207(2) — if that's you, ignore this schedule and pay self-assessment tax when filing. Illustrative only — not tax advice. Verify on the official Income Tax e-Filing portal.

How advance tax is worked out

The calculator first computes your total liability with MTL.tax.calcTax(taxableIncome, regime) — the same AY 2026-27 engine used across the site, including the 87A rebate, surcharge and 4% cess. It then subtracts any TDS already deducted: advanceTaxPayable = max(0, liability − TDS). If that payable comes to less than ₹10,000, advance tax is not required and the schedule is hidden.

The installment schedule

When advance tax does apply, it is paid in four cumulative installments. The table below shows both the running total due by each date and the amount for that quarter:

Due byCumulativeThis installment
15 June15%15%
15 September45%30%
15 December75%30%
15 March100%25%

"Cumulative" means by 15 September you should have paid 45% in total, not an extra 45%. The calculator above fills in the rupee figures for your liability.

Missing or short-paying an installment

Paying late or paying less than the cumulative target can attract interest under Sections 234B and 234C, charged on the shortfall for the period it stayed unpaid. This calculator estimates the installments only, not any interest. For exactly how that interest is computed, read advance tax and 234B/234C interest.

Frequently asked questions

When is advance tax required?

Advance tax is required when your total tax liability for the year, after subtracting TDS already deducted, is ₹10,000 or more. Below ₹10,000 you do not need to pay advance tax. One exception: resident senior citizens (60 or older) with no business or professional income are fully exempt from advance tax under Section 207(2), whatever the amount — they can simply pay self-assessment tax when filing. This calculator flags when your payable falls under that threshold. This is illustrative — your figures depend on your actual income and TDS.

What are the advance tax due dates and percentages?

For AY 2026-27 the cumulative targets are: by 15 June at least 15% of your liability, by 15 September 45%, by 15 December 75% and by 15 March 100%. The calculator shows both the cumulative amount due by each date and the amount for that installment.

How does TDS affect advance tax?

TDS already deducted from your salary, interest or other income counts towards your tax for the year, so it is subtracted before working out advance tax. Your advance tax payable is the total liability minus TDS, and only that net figure is spread across the four installments.

What happens if I miss an advance tax installment?

Paying late or short can attract interest under Sections 234B and 234C. The interest is charged on the shortfall for the period it remained unpaid. See our guide on advance tax and 234B/234C interest for how it is computed; this calculator estimates the installments only, not any interest.
